On the Beach It’s still an island after all, so if you’re not looking for a brutal mountain run, take in a beautiful tranquil beach. Down in the south, you’ll find Colonia de Saint Jordi, a protected nature reserve. You’ll’ have just the dunes and the birds for company if you get there early enough. What makes this perfect is that it’s a loop with enough diversity in the terrain to avoid getting sand in your socks. But still: you’re running at the seaside. Go early before sunrise or late, just before sunset. We’d recommend sunset as you can then get a beer or apertif at the nearby bar. It’s a 10km loop, starting at the aforementioned hotel then simply follow your nose for 5km, pass around the old building halfway (can’t miss it, it’s the only few buildings you’ll pass) and once back, get yourself a beverage at bar 5illes beach bar and restaurant and enjoy watching the sun sink into the ocean. Monastery Lluc This is a beautiful day out in one of the most scenic parts of the island. Created for those who are willing to spend some time up in the forest and mountains, it follows a section of the GR221 trail and is an easy route to navigate. Take the bus or car (or bike if you’re feeling lively) to Monastery Lluc, the journey up there itself is worth the time. If you’re travelling up by bike the Col de sa Bataille will really get you warmed up. Don’t forget to bring a lock and hydration equipment. At the Monastery, where the run starts, you can fill your bottles. It’s a 16km run with 1000m uphill. The first section is in the forest, on a nice trail (trail shoes are recommended). After a steady 5km climb, you’ll leave the shadowy roads, for panoramic trails with magnificent views over perfectly run-able singletrack. Take your time to complete the uphill because from that point on it’s all downhill, on the same run-able roads as the uphill part. It’s a loop, so you’ll end up at the Monastery where there are bars & restaurants to get you recharged for the journey home, especially if you’re pedalling back. Sa Calobra The longest and hardest trail in theory, but worth every drop of sweat and toil. Sa Calobra is a name most people who know of the island will have heard. Known as one of the most epic climbs, designed for cyclists (and car adverts), we had no other choice but to offer you a trail running alternative. Our best tip here is to leave early, as the canyon of Torrent de Pareis where Sa Calobra resides won’t offer you much shade once the sun is up. You will also need to park your car if driving here, and places are limited. Starting point is Escorca. If you do the whole tour, it’s a 27km long run, with very technical terrain, so make sure to bring enough water and solids. There are two ‘extras’ in the route: climbing up to Puig Major. If you skip these (it’s the same way back), it’s a 20k run with just under 1000m uphill. The route starts hard, running through Torrent de Pareis where you’ll see Sa Calobra, Puig Major, Escorca, and Torre de sa Mola. There are thankfully some stops to refuel, so make this one a day out on the trails and don’t lose yourself in taking pictures. Use the Komoot route for easy navigation. Sóller A trail run of 11km with gorgeous changes of scenery and terrain with trails and a road included, the MA10. This tarmac is only a small stretch of the route and the rest is ridiculously beautiful. Start at the beach and find your way up taking the main road, in the direction of Sóller. Following the smaller paths you reach the MA10 for a short but steady climb. Then it’s on your way to the cliffs. This is where the fun begins and where the infamous Mallorcan goats rule the roost. Take your time to find the right path. When in doubt, just follow the GR221 towards Refuge Muleta. If you want to go a bit off track, follow the purple dots – these will guide you through the high grasses and rocky sculptures. This is a 3-4km section which then drops you out on a run towards the lighthouse at Refuge Muleta and back onto the main road to the beach. You can’t miss this as you will have the cliffs by your side for direction. Cap Formentor Options, that’s what this route is all about. When you’re on holiday with friends, family, children, it’s important to play your cards right. Take the scenic route north all the way up to Cap Formentor. This route starts at the major parking. This route has three options: 1. Start with an easy 5k stretch in the woods that is flat, straight forward, and in the shade. The bus also travels up to the end point here. It’s also a nice gentle hike. 2. At the bus stop take the downhill left or right, and back up, left or right (with the signs for Cala Murta / Cala Figuera beaches). This is a perfect leg-day workout on a small rocky trail. Both with views over the bay, with no restaurants or boulevards to spoil the view. 3. Do it all, from the parking, to the busstop, up and down on both sides. This is the version on Komoot. Whatever option you choose, end up with a dip in the sea. Keep your shoes on, to protect you from sliding, and to refresh yourself for the run back. Café to Castle For those who are staying close or central to the island’s capital, we’ve created a fun loop starting at our store in Plaça del Rosari. No need for a bus transfer. Just lace up and vamos. It’s a 10km run, perfectly doable with regular running shoes. If there is one word that comes to mind here, it’s stairs. You’ll definitely bump into some uphill manmade traversees on this sojourn. The road is very easy to find: run towards the harbour, then find your way up in the direction of Castillo Bellver. In this green lung of the city there are tonnes of fun trails (still run-able with normal shoes) to explore. The route we’ve created follows the best road, with again some stairs. Don’t worry, normal inclines are represented here as well. Total meters up: 160. When leaving the park, go back down to the harbour, do a fast stretch following the cycling road and head back to the store. For those who are used to running a stable 10k in an hour, including the inclines this will take approximately 1h 30.
